Fletcher Harrington has crafted a unique sound and style, one far too varied
to merely be labeled "alt-country," the band's most common

from a deep well of rock, punk, pop, country and folk influences.
Unconcerned with what's currently hot in the pop marketplace, he makes music

heights scaled by Hank Williams, Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson in their

On its latest disc, "Cement Pond," Cowboy Buddha defines new
territory with the kind of raw roots-rock perfectly suited to Harrington's
witty and tough tales of life in modern-day America.
In the wry "Kiss the Train," he sings sorrowfully of a tragic

"Deze vrij nieuwe alternatieve countryband uit Costa Mesa, Orange
County, draait grotendeels rond de figuur van bandleider Fletcher
Harrington. Fletcher is een uit Mississippi ingeweken songwriter die zijn
hart heeft verpand aan het uitgestrekte landschap in “the Old West”, en
die de inspiratie voor zijn songs haalt bij filmlegende John Ford en bij
gerenommeerde schrijvers als William Faulkner en James Joyce. Alhoewel de
groep gedurende meer dan vier jaar op zoek was naar een enigszins eigen
sound, dienen hun muzikale invloeden toch gezocht te worden bij grootheden
als Dylan, Neil Young, Lou Reed (With A Gun To My Head is meer dan een
knipoog naar Vicious), R.E.M. (het erg rootsy My own Devices), Richard
Buckner, Robbie Fulks, maar vooral het zeer alt. countrygetinte Uncle
Tupelo. Via Internet heeft deze groep ook in Europa al een schare fans
verzameld en zo verzorgden ze ook al een optreden bij onze Noorderburen op
het Zevenbergen International Music Festival.
Cement Pond (de titel van de cd ontleenden ze bij de Beverly Hillbillies) is
na de cassettes en enkele EP’s in eigen beheer, en de EP-compilatie Guns
Ammo Bait Film Gifts Snacks Maps, het eerste volwaardige werkdocument van de
band. Het is een vrij consistent album dat langzaam zijn geheimen prijsgeeft
en elke luisterbeurt nog meer weet te boeien. Naast elf songs van de hand
van Harrington, vinden we ook nog een mooie cover van de
Hillman/Parsons-ballad Juanita terug. Wat echter het meest van al opviel bij
de eerste luisterbeurt, was de hoge ijle stem van zanger Fletcher. Ze doet
mij bij momenten denken aan de stem van Jay Farrar van Son Volt, maar meer
nog aan die legendarische stem van de zanger van cultgroep Pavlov’s Dog
uit de seventies. De heren van Cowboy Buddha weten duidelijk waarmee ze
bezig zijn. Ze timmeren langzaam maar zeker aan de weg naar de top en ik
denk dat we in de toekomst nog wel van hen zullen horen. Give ‘em a try!
